South African home networks fail for two reasons: the router the fibre installer left behind, and power interruptions. Both are fixable without spending a fortune. Here's the setup we recommend — the same approach we use on business installations, scaled for home.
Step 1: Separate the boxes
The single biggest upgrade is moving off the all-in-one ISP router. A proper setup splits the job in two: a router/gateway that handles your fibre connection and security, and one or more wireless access points placed where you actually use Wi-Fi. The ISP box was built to a price; dedicated gear is built to work.
Step 2: Plan for the power going out
A network that dies with the grid is a network you can't rely on. Three practical rules:
Count the watts. A modern home gateway and access point together typically draw under 20W. That means even a modest DC mini-UPS keeps your fibre CPE, router and an access point alive for hours — far cheaper than running them off an inverter.
Prefer PoE. Access points powered over Ethernet (PoE) draw their power from one central point. Back up that one point and every AP in the house stays up. It also means no power adapters in the ceiling.
Back up the fibre box too. The most common mistake: the router survives load-shedding, but the ONT/fibre termination box was plugged into the wall. Put it on the same protected supply.
Step 3: Choose gear that fits your house
Small home or flat: a single well-placed gateway with built-in Wi-Fi — Ubiquiti's compact Cloud Gateways are excellent — covers 80–120m² comfortably.
Larger or double-storey home: a gateway plus ceiling-mounted access points, cabled where possible. One AP per floor, centrally placed, beats four Wi-Fi extenders every time. The current Wi-Fi 7 long-range APs we stock cover impressive areas per unit.

Step 4: Cable what doesn't move
TVs, desktop PCs, consoles and CCTV recorders shouldn't be on Wi-Fi at all. Every device you cable frees up airtime for the devices that genuinely need wireless. Decent network cables cost little, and a small switch behind the TV cabinet tidies everything up.
The mistakes we see weekly
Wi-Fi extenders daisy-chained through the house (each hop halves your speed). Routers hidden inside steel TV cabinets. Access points placed where the cable was convenient rather than where people sit. And 2.4GHz-only smart-home devices blamed on the "slow internet" — they were always going to be slow; isolate them and move on.
